Changes UK CIC

Changes UK is an award-winning, user-led, Community Interest Company at the heart of the recovery community and the forefront of recovery culture in Birmingham.
In response to the increasing demand for holistic recovery services in Birmingham, Changes was registered as a charity last year and opened the UK’s first Recovery Academy, to maintain a culture of healthcare in the community.
This year Changes UK re-located to Recovery Central, a one-stop-shop for the recovery community, where people in recovery re-build their lives through social enterprise; as they are supported towards positive outcomes, including volunteering opportunities, training, work experience and employment.

Pathways Covered

Alcohol

Overview

Welcome to CHANGES UK
Since its inception almost a decade ago, Changes has been developing and delivering innovative, person-centred support for people seeking abstinent recovery from drugs and/or alcohol. Our approach to recovery has been developed by service users and is peer led - in other words, people who have lived experience of achieving and maintaining recovery lead the way and provide the support that service users need.

We understand that abstaining from drugs and alcohol is just the beginning of building a new life free from addiction; therefore Changes provides services that support the whole recovery journey - from dependence to independence. We provide a detox service, community based rehabilitation, supported and move on housing and opportunities to gain accredited qualifications, volunteering and work experience. Service users at the beginning of their recovery journey are supported 24 hours a day by qualified staff and our specially trained volunteer peer mentors.

What we do

Clarity House provides an opportunity for detox in the community for people to work towards abstinence and begin their recovery journey. They are supported by our Peer Mentors and specialist medical practitioners in safe and comfortable surroundings.
It is an intensive residential programme with a person-centred approach to achieve a state of mental, physical, emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing.

Dependence on drugs and alcohol are key causes of crime and, therefore, recovery is a big part of desistance. Recovery is often used as a metaphor for desistence, with re-offending often referred to as a ‘relapse’.

Problematic drug and alcohol users need comprehensive and holistic post-treatment support that is delivered in the community, including ‘through-the-gate’ Peer Mentor support for ex-offenders, to reduce the risk of relapse.
