SUIT (Service User Involvement Team)

SUIT is a multi award winning drug and alcohol recovery service, which is managed and delivered by those in recovery. We promote active citizenship and our staff and volunteers deliver multi sector interventions by drawing upon opportunities and resources available to support individual need. We offer opportunities for those affected by substances (and associated areas) to partake in strategic involvement to help improve the quality and effectiveness of services and system.

We also offer an hundreds of choices and options for individuals to increase the quality of their lives, by ensuring that the following areas are addressed -: homelessness, welfare assistance, substance use, mental health, poverty, indebtedness, employability, education & training, social networks and relationships plus many others.

We promote volunteering as a way of meeting various needs and can offer those accessing drug/alcohol treatment services an opportunity to join our award winning volunteer programme. This gives people the chance to take all of the past negative experiences' of addiction and use them in a constructive way to inspire and encourage their peers. The SUIT volunteer programme was awarded The Queens Award for Voluntary Service (equivalent to MBE) in June 2014.

In 2015/16, SUIT achieved the following -: supported 953 individuals on 3290 occasions, whilst delivering 4266 interventions across 63 areas of need. We worked in collaboration with 522 different organisations, companies and resources to meet individual need. We have supported 141 people in to employment during the past 5 year period.

We offer free sporting, recreational activities to those accessing drug/alcohol treatment services such as boxing classes and are willing to fund other things (within financial boundaries).

We believe that everybody should be given opportunities to achieve their goals and aspirations and are living examples that change is possible, with the right guidance and support.

Overview

The project is a charity based organisation that is run and host by the Wolverhampton Voluntary Sector Council (WVSC). This puts us in a position whereby we can be completely independent to drug treatment providers, but close enough to be able to influence and impact on the way that drug treatment is delivered in our city.

What we do

SUIT have been running now for over three years, and since our humble beginnings in a corner of the WVSC building with only 2 staff members one volunteer, to 3 staff and 10 volunteers with a vast array of work that not only shows off recovering drug users talents, but also helps to educate many people and organisations about some of the dangers of substance misuse and the difficulties that people face in overcoming them.

We are commissioned to take on volunteers who are currently receiving drug treatment, who have received drug treatment in the last 6 months, or those who are looking to access treatment – all this within the realms of Wolverhampton.

We primarily work with those individuals who use/d Heroin or Crack Cocaine, however due the ever changing face of addiction we do have some flexibility with this, and we never refuse to offer help and advice to anyone who need help.

The team consists of a full time drug service user involvement officer, a part time administrator, a part time project worker and 10 volunteers. All of whom bar one, have suffered from addiction.

The team work on a number of tasks and activities at any given time. The types of work (of which many can be found on this site), shows the dynamic approach our unique organisation has towards substance misuse and recovery.
